Leaf Market Bag

This pattern was the result of me wanting to make a bag that was beyond the basic mesh bag.  To throw another element in, I wanted a project that would be 100% customizable, so anyone could take my basic pattern and create something that suits their own needs.  I will include a basic chart and pattern but I’m also going to give you the “recipe” you simply pick and choose what you want to do with it as well.

It is important to know that this pattern is written in the round.  So what does that mean?  You will not be turning your work at any time while you are working in the round.  You will also be reading your charts from the right to the left the entire time.

Yarn:  I used two balls of Cascade Ultra, one in Pima in Spring Green 3762 and one in Buff 3719 for the two tones bag..  I was playing chicken with the yarn towards the end, so if you crochet looser I’d suggest buying two balls of each different color. The single colored bag was made is Paprika 3771.  If  you are making the bag in one color you will be just fine using 2 balls.

Hook:  I worked with a 3.5 mm/H hook.

Notions:  If you have trouble working in rounds I suggest using a stitch marker.   Simply place it in the top of your turning chain so that you will know exactly where to place your slip at the end of the round.  You will also need a needle to weave in ends.

Pattern:  Using Spring Green yarn, begin by chaining 6.  Place a SL in the first chain you made, creating a circle.

Rnd 1: CH up 3. Place 11 DC in begin circle. Counting your chain up, you will now have 12 DC’s.

Rnd 2: CH up 3. Place 2 DC in each DC from the previous row. Counting your chain up, you will now have 24 DCs.

***Choice time. Do you want to bag to be done in one color or two color tapestry work?  If you want to add the tapestry work follow the color chart below, reading your chart from right to left. For the one color version, simply move to RND 3 and pretend this color chart doesn’t exists.

RND 3: CH up 3. Place DC in the same space as the CH up 3. *1DC in each of the next 2 STs. 2DC in the next ST.* repeat from * to * until the end of the round.  You will have 36 DC’s.

RND 4: CH up 3. Place DC in the same space as the ch up 3. *1DC in each of the next 3 STs. 2DC in the next ST.* repeat from * to * until the end of the round.  You will have 48 DC’s.

RND 6: CH up 3. Place DC in the same space as the ch up 3. *1DC in each of the next 5 STs. 2DC in the next ST.* repeat from * to * until the end of the round.  You will have 72 DC’s.

RND 8: CH up 3. Place DC in the same space as the CH up 3. *1DC in each of the next 7 STs. 2DC in the next ST.* repeat from * to * until the end of the round.  You will have 96 DC’s.

RND 9: CH up 3. Place DC in the same space as the CH up 3. *1DC in each of the next 8 STs. 2DC in the next ST.* repeat from * to * until the end of the round.  You will have 108 DC’s.

RND 10: CH up 3. Place DC in the same space as the CH up 3. *1DC in each of the next 9 STs. 2DC in the next st.* repeat from * to * until the end of the round.  You will have 120 DC’s.

***Next we are going to begin on the sides of the bag. Because we are no longer increasing our rounds, you will see the side begin to curl up. That is the shape you want to see. The charStitch ledgen for market bagts will show one full repeat, those will be the stitches in purple, and what to do at the beginning and end of each round in black.  Depending on the size bag you decide to make, you will start each round with the stitches in black, repeat the purple stitches, then finish up the round with the stitches in back.

Place 2 DC in the next DC from the previous rnd.* Repeat from * to * 8 more times or until you have one last ch space in the rnd.  SK CK SP.  SK DC, place 2 DC in next DC. Place 1 DC in last space in Rnd 5, then SL to the 3rd ch in the beginning ST. Sl to the 3rd ST in the chain 3 space.

Rnd 6: Ch up 3.  1 DC in each of the next 2 ST. *Ch 3. SK CH SP. SK CH SP. SK 1 DC. Place 1 DC in each of the next 6 DC. *  Repeat from * to * 8 more times or until you have one last CH SP in the Rnd. SK CH SP. SK DC, place 1 DC in the next two sp. Sl to the 3rd st in the chain 3 space.

RND 7: CH up 3. DC in next st. *Ch 4. SK CH SP.  Place DC in the top of the DC from the previous rnd.  CH 4. SK CH SP. SK next DC. Place 1 DC in each of the next 3 DC.* Repeat from * to * 8 more times or until you have one last CH SP in the Rnd. SK CH SP. SK DC, place 1 DC in the next SP. SL to the 3rd ST in the chain 3 space.

RND 8: CH up 6, counts as 1 DC plus CH 3. SK CH SP.  *Place 5 DC in the top of the DC from the previous RND. CH 3. SK CH SP. Place 1 DC in the top of the DC from the previous RND. CH 3* Repeat all the way around and SL to the 3rd ST in the CH 3 SP.

Change to the off white color yarn. If your bag is just one color, ignore this direction. 22

RND 9: CH up 3. *2DC in the CH SP. 2 DC in the next SP. 1 DC in each of the next 3. 2DC in the next SP. 2DC in the CH SP. (1DC in the top of the DC from the previous RND).* Repeat 9 stopping at the bracketed section.  SL to the 3rd ST in the CH 3 SP.

RND 10: CH up 3. Pl DC in each DC all the way around. Cl to the 3rd ST in the CH 3.

Round 11: Repeat round 10.

Repeat Rounds 4-11 one more time.

Move to making the strap. This is the only time when you will be working in rows, flipping your work at the end of each round.

Inkedhandle_LI

Place 1 DC in each of the next 7 DC. Turn your work, chain up 3, and place 1 DC in each DC across.  Repeat this until your strap is the length you want it to be.  Make sure to end on the wrong side, so that you can SC it to the inside of the bag.

My pattern repeat is in multiples of 12 AND my circular base is in multiples of 12. That was done on purpose so you may make this bag easily in any shape or size you want.  You can make it into a wine bottle holder, a water bottle holder, a cozy for a mason jar, etc.  Simply start with RND 1, and make the round the size you need.  Next begin on the sides of the bag and make it as tall as you need.

Happy crocheting.
