There are always times when you need a quick gift; this falls into that category. This entire set took me 4 nights of crocheting while watching TV (and doing dishes, and putting kids to bed, and trying to pay attention to my husband) in the evenings. Better yet, because you can do this in an infinite number of colors, you will get to use up some of that scrap yarn that is sitting in your stash.
Yarn: I used Lily Sugar and Cream in a variety of colors. I buy the cones because of the value; for 14.99 on you get 14 oz and 706 yards of 100% cotton yarn. It is a medium weight, that works up perfectly on at 5.0mm/H/8 sized hook, so it is great in a wide variety of projects. Here is a link to Yarnspiration where you purchase the yarn.
- For the coral bath loofa I used Key Lime Pie Ombre for the body and Mod blue for the frill at the tips
- For the sea urchin soap holder I used Ocean Stripes
- For the Purple sea star I used a discontinues color, but the closest match is Freshly Pressed Ombre and for the Brown sea star I used Chocolate Ombre
Hook: I used a 5.5mm/J hook
Notions: Needle for weaving in ends. An elastic hair tie or pony tail holder for the soap holder.
Coral Bath loofa: It does not matter if you use the ch at the beginning of each row as a stitch or not. You are working in rows and turning your work at the end of every row
Row 1: Place a SC in the 2nd chain from the hook. *Place 1 sc in each of the next 4 chains. then place 2 sc in the next stitch* repeat from * to * until the end of the row.
Row 2 – 6: Chain up two, then repeat row 1.
You will have a slight spiral in your fabric, this is totally normal. Now you are ready to get frilly
Row 7: Ch up 3. Place 2 DC in each of the next SC, all the way to the end of row 7.
Row 8: Ch up 3. Place 3 DC in each of the next SC all the way until the end. Tie off your yarn.
Row 9: Begin using your contrasting color for the tips of your coral. Ch up 2, and place 1 sc in each dc across to the end of row 9. Tie off your yarn.
Starfish wash cloth. Ch 3 at the beg of each rnd does count as a dc. You will be working in rounds and will not turn your work at the end of each round.
Ch 4. Join with sl st to form a ring in the 3rd ch from the hook.
1st rnd: Ch 6 (counts as 1 dc. Ch 3). (1 dc. Ch 3) 4 times in ring. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch.
2nd rnd: Sl st in next ch-3 sp. Ch 3. (2 dc. Ch 2. 3 dc) in same sp as last sl st. (3 dc. Ch 2. 3 dc in next ch-3 sp) 4 times. Join with sl st to top of ch 3.
3rd rnd: Sl st in next dc. Ch 3. 1 dc in next dc. *(3 dc. Ch 2. 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp. 1 dc in each of next 2 dc. skip the next 2 dc.** 1 dc in each of next 2 dc.* Rep from * to * 3 times more. Then from * to ** once. Join with sl st to top of ch 3.
4th rnd: Sl st in next dc. Ch 3. 1 dc in each of next 3 dc. *(3 dc. Ch 6. 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp. 1 dc in each of next 4 dc. Skip the next 2 dc.** 1 dc in each of next 4 dc.* Rep from * to * 3 times more. Then from * to ** once. Join with sl st to top of ch 3.
5th rnd: Sl st in next dc. Ch 3. 1 dc in each of next 5 dc. *(4 dc. Ch 2. 4 dc) in next ch-2 sp. 1 dc in each of next 6 dc. Skip the next 2 dc.** 1 dc in each of next 6 dc.* Rep from * to *
3 times more. Then from * to ** once. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. Tie off.
Sea Urchin Soap Holder: The Ch 3 at the beginning of each round does count as a stitch. This will be worked in the round and you will not turn your work. Make sure your pony tail holder is big enough that you can pass a bar of soap through it.
Ch 6. Place a sl in the first st to make a circle.
Rnd 1: Chain up three, place 11 dc in the circle.
**You are going to make 6 rounds of a circle. Please follow the chart below for rows 2-6. Also, remember to ch up 3 to begin each round.
|Row||Increase every number stitches||Total at the end|
|3||Every 1 stitches||36|
|4||Every 2 stitches||48|
|5||Every 3 stitches||60|
|6||Every 4 stitches||72|
Rnd 7: Get your pony tail holder. I adjusted the size of mine by folding it over until it was the size of my soap. Ch 1. Make the next sc over the top of the pony tail holder. Sc in each dc in the round, making sure to sc through the pony tail holder. sl to the ch 1 and tie off.
